Historic Mooresville
Home and Garden Tour
May 12, 2007 - 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
The 53 residents of Mooresville, Alabama proudly invite you to step back in time at our Home and Garden Tour to benefit the preservation of our historic public buildings.
Visitors will experience 19th century village life by strolling our beautiful gardens and tree-lined streets and touring our open homes, the 1821 Stagecoach Tavern, two churches (1839 and 1854), and the oldest post office in Alabama (1840). Food and drink will be available for purchase.
Woody Peebles' private collection of Americana will also be open to the public.
Five beautiful private homes will be open to visitors during the Tour:
- The circa 1826 Zeitler-McCrary House at 4845 High Street is a Federal period house occupied by the same family for six generations. The original out buildings (kitchen and smokehouse) are in excellent condition.
- The Zeitler-Hill-McLain House on Lauderdale Street was begun in 1927 and completed about 1945. The house is built on the site of the town square, laid out when Mooresville was founded in 1818.
- The Peebles-Wilson-Eadon-Barran House, built in 1947, is a charming clapboard cottage that has undergone substantial additions.
- The McCrary House at 4773 High Street combines the character of the past with all the comforts and conveniences of modern life. Constructed in 2005, the design complements the historic Mooresville community by drawing on architectural forms, details and materials typical of early nineteenth century houses in north Alabama.
- The Sneed “Shop House” on Market Street was built in 1986 as a 1780-style saltbox. The house sits on the original woodworking shop lot, which was adjacent to the blacksmith shop. This lot was also known as the wagon yard because customers left their wagons there for repair.
